Honley Show - Home Page

Honley Show is one of the most prestigious, best attended and well respected rural shows in the country. Now in its 74th year, the Show’s Farnley Tyas showground remains one of the region’s best venues to showcase a stunning range of activities, agricultural events, stands and displays.

2008 - On behalf of the Honley Show Society could I take this opportunity to thank everyone who came along on the 14th June & helped us make it a very successful day.

We strive to give people an insight into the traditions of farming - past & present - whilst at the same time providing Entertainment & Attractions geared to giving people a really good day out.

As I walked the Showground on the day it was pleasing to hear how much people were enjoying themselves & would definitely be back next year. Please take a look at the "photo gallery" on the website to see more.

As for 2009 we are already planning our Events & Attractions. If you have not been to the Show before please pencil Saturday 13th June 2009 in your diary. We believe we have one of the best Showground’s around - the views alone are spectacular.

If you would like to help the Show there are a couple of ways you could do this.

We are always looking for VOLUNTEERS. This could be as a member of our committee - involved in the planning of the Show or providing practical help in the days & weeks running up to the Show. If you would like to know more please give me a ring on 01484 662513 or email Jimpurcell1711@aol.com & I will let you know more.

By becoming MEMBER of the Honley Show Society. For an annual fee you will be kept up to date with activities surrounding the Show as well as receiving a number of privileges on the day - reserved car parking, admission to the Showground & entrance to the Members marquee - situation at the heart of the Showground. If you would like to know more please speak to our Membership Secretary - details can be found on the "contacts" page of our website.

Jim Purcell,
Chairman.

School Farm visits by local pupils

A letter from
Sue Asher, Assistant Headteacher,
Honley, Infant School.

Honley Show Committee expressed a wish to fund an outdoor visit for both our school and Honley Junior School, promoting the understanding of farming, agriculture and the countryside, to enrich our curriculum and be an integral part of it. This proposal linked perfectly to our present Science topic 'Plants and animals in the environment.'

The committee have agreed to fund the project for four years so that it has a chance of becoming embedded and has a significant effect on individual pupils as they transfer from the infant to the junior school.

On Thursday 22nd May 2008 56 Year 2 children went to visit Cronkshaw Fold Farm which is a small working farm in Helmshore, Lancashire. We experienced the importance of growing food, (and even brought some rhubarb home with us to make rhubarb crumble at school the next day!) farming, animal care and sensitive land management.

We had a wonderful day out, even the weather was kind to us and co-incidentally the coach registration plate was 'NAY.'

A selection of work from our visit was on display in the Countryside tent at Honley Show on Saturday 14th June 2008.

During the day the children visited the vegetable plot and learnt the names of vegetables, herbs and salad ingredients. The children realised that their food did not just come from a supermarket!! We met different breeds of sheep, found bones, learnt to plait reeds and met Primrose the pregnant cow! Watering the ducklings was a favourite activity along with milking the model cow, feeding the lambs, stroking the piglets and farm cat.

We identified minibeasts, used our five senses and created ground art. Pond dipping was very exciting.

The children will remember this day out forever. Thank you to Honley Show for putting something back into the community.
