School Farm visits by local pupils

Honley Show believes it is vital to invest in the future of our landscape and in the management of our countryside. A new initiative this year is our sponsorship of primary school visits to see farms in action and to see how local food is produced. The first visits took place in April 2008, and we hope to continue this programme for the next few years to make sure that all children in Honley can benefit. Thanks to Mrs Asher of Honley Infants and Mrs Haigh of Honley Juniors for making this happen.

Visit the Countryside Marquee to see a display of photographs and work by the pupils on Show day.

Exhibiting your tractor at Honley Show

Due to the huge popularity of this show, space is at a premium and we are only allocated the space for around 30 tractors, hence the reason why it has to be by invitation only.

Should you not receive an invitation to this year’s show and wish your tractor to be considered for the one next year, please forward details of your vehicle to me at the address below::

Dry Stone Walling Association of Great Britain(West York’s Branch)

(Yorkshire Open Dry Stone Walling Championships)

Dry Stone Walling Competition at Honley Show

The branch was founded in 1986 and has had a presence at Honley almost continuosly since 1989. We run an Annual Competition at the show and this is open to all. This year there will be 5 classes ranging from professionals to juniors. There is a have a go class for Novices. Competitors are required to build a short piece of wall ( chosen at random) within the wall section allocated to their class. Entry Fee is £5 but everyone who is not a prizewinner gets this back on completion of their section of wall.

Further details are available from paul.webley@btinternet.com 01484 845219

A full list of classes and prize money is laid out in the competion schedule.

Competitors have travelled to compete at Honley from as far away as Scotland, Cumbria and the Cotswold but since Foot and Mouth numbers have been less than in the 90’s and there is every chance of local wallers doing well.

The branch will have a marquee on the showground adjacent to the competition and will also be carrying out a demonstration close to the Countryside Tent. Any dry stone walling queries can be answered at either of these two tents. The branch runs a full programme of activities throughout the year including training courses ( suitable for beginners and those wishing to improve their skill), practice sessions, talks to interested organisations, nationally accredited vocational certification sessions ( we are the centre for examinations for Lantra Awards) and regular monthly meetings to which all are welcomed.
